Virtual ArtWalk Show

The Mill Valley Arts Commission announces the

Featured Virtual ArtWalk Artist for December 2020: Derick Carss

As a photographer and designer based in Marin County, I've called California home for the past five years. Raised in Scotland, however, I've led a semi-nomadic life, using photography as a means to establish connections with the places I've lived.

I love being outside and my photography is a natural extension of the outdoor experience. As an introvert, I appreciate the moments of quiet solitude and mindfulness that nature brings. I find these practices essential for good mental health and I enjoy the challenge of capturing the feelings of peace and inspiration.

Through my background as a designer I’ve developed an appreciation for simple, minimalist compositions, but I constantly strive to create images that go beyond purely aesthetic choices and authentically connect to the environment. We each experience that relationship in a unique way and, with these photographs, I encourage personal interpretation.

Our wilderness represents an extreme duality in perceptions. There’s tension in the very idea of public lands, but a deepening emotional divide in how humans experience nature might be unique to this always-connected age. For some, these are naturally beautiful, ecologically important spaces; to others they are forbidding, desolate expanses. These black and white Californian landscapes explore that balance.
